Tennis team heads to Wellington

The Wanganui representative tennis season will conclude with a big weekend in the capital as a squad of eight compete in the Hexagonal at the Renouf Tennis Centre today.

Wanganui will be mixed in with three Wellington squads, plus Taranaki and Manawatu - the latter retaining the Christie Cup for the winter after they took it off Wanganui and then defended it against Taranaki earlier this month.

The team's will play singles, doubles and mixed doubles today and tomorrow.

"The girls are pretty strong and the boys are on the case," said team manager and men's reserve Sean Edmonds.

"Leela [Beattie] will be the strongest lady down there.

"I'm expecting a good showing."

The games start at 1pm.

The Wanganui team is

Men: Simon O'Leary, Nick Caton, Patrice Mathey, Tim McKenzie;
Women: Leela Beattie, Georgia Atkinson and former WHS students Gabrielle Hiri and Paris Butters.
