Strong Performances and Personal Bests Highlight Athletics Success
Whanganui High School athletes delivered an impressive set of performances, achieving podium finishes, personal bests, and even breaking school records across a range of track and field events.
Leading the way was James McGregor, who claimed first place in the Senior Boys 300m Hurdles with an outstanding time of 40.16 seconds, a new personal best. He also backed this up with a fifth-place finish in the 400m, again recording a personal best.
The Intermediate Boys 4 x 100m relay team of Ethan Wells, Reiley Thomas, and Tyler O'Brien produced a superb run to take first place in 44.17 seconds.
Hayden Stead had a standout meet in the Senior Boys sprints, finishing second in the 100m with a personal best time of 10.95 seconds, setting a new WHS record. He followed this up with another record-breaking performance in the 200m, placing third in 22.18 seconds, also a personal best.
Bruce McGregor showed consistency and speed in the Intermediate Boys division, finishing second in both the 100m and 300m finals, achieving personal bests in each event.
In the field events, Auguz Thongskul secured second place in the Senior Boys Long Jump with a leap of 6.37m, while Lulu Dufty impressed in the Senior Girls division, placing second in the Long Jump (5.19m) and third in the Triple Jump (10.64m).
The Senior Boys 4 x 100m relay team of Hayden Stead, Auguz Thongskul, and Lucas Howard also made the podium, finishing third.
Several athletes recorded strong finals performances and personal bests. Tyler O’Brien placed fourth in both the Intermediate Boys 100m and 200m finals, while Olive Coombs reached the finals of both the 80m and 300m hurdles, achieving personal bests in each.
Ethan Wells qualified for the finals in both the 200m and 400m in the Intermediate Boys division, and Sean Frieslaar delivered personal best performances in the finals of both the 800m and 1500m.
In the hurdles, Charlie McBride finished fifth in the Intermediate Boys 100m Hurdles final with a personal best time of 14.83 seconds. Xavier Brotherston also achieved a personal best, placing fifth in the Steeplechase.
Overall, it was a highly successful meet for Whanganui High School, highlighted by determination, depth across events, and a strong showing of emerging talent.
