Whanganui High School Sports - Tournament Week

Winter Tournament Week Update 💛💚

Netball A1

Day 2 -Tough game this morning against the LNISS champs from 2025 St Mary's going down 51-22

The girls had a good win in the afternoon against Kapiti College 48-31.

Boys Junior Football

A challenging but ultimately fantastic first day for the WHS Junior Boys Football team at the Hillsdene Tournament, competing in a very tough group. The day started with a 2–0 loss to Hutt International Boys’ School. HIBS were too strong, but the boys battled hard, with Logan Plant earning Man of the Match after stepping into defence from his usual midfield role and putting in a fantastic performance.

The second game against Tauranga Boys’ High School finished 1–1. Tauranga have a school roll of around 2,300 students, making the result even more impressive. After taking an early lead, the boys put in a strong performance but were unfortunate not to come away with the win. Hunter Matthews was named Man of the Match after a brave performance despite taking a knock, as the team also had to deal with a number of injuries.

The final game was a different story. After talking before the game about teamwork, positivity, working hard and being in it for each other, the boys responded brilliantly. Against an unbeaten Napier Boys’ High School side, they produced their best football of the tournament to secure an impressive 4–1 win. Noah Hill was outstanding in defence, while Inbar Chechik caused plenty of problems up front and scored two goals, with both sharing Player of the Match honours.

Two pool games remain tomorrow as the boys continue their push for a top-eight finish. What a way to finish Day 1! ⚽💚💛

Girls Hockey

Day 1 -Girls Hockey had a 7-0 loss against Cambridge High School this morning. They held their heads high and went into a hard fought battle against Epsom Girls Grammar School for their second game of the day. They played hard but lost 2-0.

Girls Football

Day 1 - The First XI Football girls kicked off the tournament with an unfortunate 1–0 loss to Kingsway School, with the only goal coming from an own goal, alongside an offside goal that didn’t count. Despite the result, the girls came out strong and showed plenty of fight in their first game.

In the afternoon, the girls were left disappointed with a 0–0 draw against Rosehill College after dominating possession and creating plenty of opportunities. Unfortunately, they just couldn’t find the back of the net. With tired bodies and tough, windy conditions, the girls had to dig deep and make do. There are plenty of positives to take away as we look ahead to the next games!

Boys Hockey

Day 1 - Boys hockey campaign got off to a rough start today with a 2-0 loss to John Paul College.
