Accolades for top school sports people - October 2015

Year 13 Wanganui High School kayaker Erica Tanner claimed the Senior Sportswoman of the Year title.

Winner of senior honours at the Secondary School Sport awards in Wanganui last night Erica Tanner of Wanganui High School receives her award from netball international Joline Henry. Erica won the award for her kayaking and multisport achievements. Stephen Perofeta of Wanganui Collegiate who won the senior sportsman award for rugby, was not at the awards night held at the Wanganui Girls' College hall. 

Senior Sportswoman Tanner (WHS) was in the new Zealand U18 Women's Sprint Kayak team to race in Australia this season. Tanner paddled into sixth place in K1 1000m at the Australasian competition in Sydney and fifth in the 500m K2.

She also finished fourth in the K1 500m and K2 200m and 500m at the NZ Nationals and took bronze in the K4 200m and 500m at the Oceania championships this year.

A member of the Wanganui Multisport and Triathlon Club, Tanner is also adept at marathon paddling winning the 10km U18 Women's race at the nationals. She also claimed the 10km National U18 series with maximum points.
