So far this year 13 young people have been helped by the Whanganui District Youth Sponsorship Programme run by the Rotary Club of Wanganui North. The aim is simple – to financially support youth in activities that develop character, leadership and confidence in sporting, cultural or recreational endeavours.

Applications come from those aged 13 to 19 from those within the Whanganui District and up to a maximum of $500 per event or activity. The latest groups to receive sponsorship include:

• Harriet Yorston who will be attending the Pat Heung Development Camp in Hong Kong. It is a Blue Light International Youth Experience and her father, a police officer, had been actively involved in Blue Light in Whanganui

Lucas Thompson who will be racing for New Zealand at the Junior World Canoe Championships in August.

• Crista Yum who will be attending the Blue Light International Youth Challenge in Scotland in July and be competing in the New Zealand against youth teams from across the UK.

• Madalyn Thompson, Leticia Farrier and Sophie Scaletti who will be travelling to Australia as part of a NZCE course of Tourism Marketing and Management. They will be seeing behind the scenes at adventure parks on the Gold Coast and experiencing the management and marketing of the complexes including Maintenance Waste Management Health and Safety.
