Junior Model UN forum discussed Zika virus

Twenty four teams of three representing different countries met at Whanganui Girls’ College on Wednesday, November 9. They came from local secondary schools, years nine and ten, and from Wanganui Intermediate. Chairperson, Kate Smith, said that she was especially impressed by the Intermediate representatives for “their research and depth of content. They are doing exceptionally well.”

The issue and potential spread of the zika virus affected country delegations differently. Those who have the virus spoke of their exposure and difficulties containing it, whereas other countries were prepared to offer research and funding for its control. Some delegates raised the possibility of closing borders but it was pointed out that this would impact negatively on trade reducing the financial resources to fight the virus. The other topic to be discussed in the afternoon was the plight of refugees.

Kate Smith has been organising Model United Nations General Assemblies (MUNGA) FOR “NIGH ON 20 YEARS.” She is pleased with the number of helpers this year and is optimistic that she might have found someone to take over the role as chair.
