Locals hope for more success - January 2015

QUICK TIME:  Laura O'Keeffe finished second in the New Zealand open water swim champs 16 and 17 year-olds 10km race.

Wanganui swimmers Laura O'Keeffe and Jazmin Phillips head to the Wellington Summer Long Course Champs this weekend after a successful national open-water showing.

The two, part of the Subway Wanganui swim team, were at Lake Taupo for the New Zealand Open Water Swim Champs last weekend. In the 10km race O'Keeffe claimed the silver medal in the 16 and 17-year-old category with a time of 02.34.01 and an overall placing of seventh.

Phillips entered the 16 and 17-year-olds 5km open water, finishing fourth in choppy conditions with a time of 01:25.40 and an overall placing of 17th .

The national championships, part of the Epic Swim event, are the first step towards qualifying for the world championships, swimmers needing to finish in the top five in the 10km men's and women's events.
