Locals play each other for bragging rights

Whanganui High School and Wanganui Collegiate will play each other to see who finishes best of the locals on finals day at the lower North Island secondary schools tournament this morning at Laird Park.

Both teams qualified for the top eight of A grade with victories on Wednesday - WHS beating Napier HS (31-29) and Tawa College (35-28), while Collegiate accounted for Samuel Marsden (28-22) and Havelock North High (31-25).

Cullinane College did not advance to the top eight, entering the playoffs for 9th-16th.

Entering the main quarterfinals yesterday morning, St Mary's toppled WHS 45-16, while Manukura bested Collegiate 46-16.

Both teams also lost their afternoon playoffs to Wellington Girls and Sacred Heart Lower Hutt respectively.

They will now meet in the playoff for 7th-8th at 10.30am today.

In the B grade quarterfinals, Nga Tawa lost to St Matthew's Collegiate 28-23 and Rangitikei College was beaten by Porirua College 27-21.

They were playing off in the afternoon to see which tier of finals they are in today.
