Lyric Singers will present their mid-year concert, ‘Taking Flight’ on Saturday, June 22 in Trinity Methodist Church. The varied programme will include young local musicians as guest artists. The first guest artists will be members of Brass Whanganui Concert Band & Junior Band. The second guest bracket will showcase student vocalists, Sophie Toyne & Leigh-ana Hale, both of whom are students of singing teacher, Marie Brooks. The final guest bracket will feature student flautist, Chantelle Piper, performing flute duets with her teacher, Lisa Boessenkool, as well as a solo item.

Choir items will include ‘A Seekers Celebration’, the Johnny Mercer song ‘Dream’ as well as a reflective bracket of songs including ‘Benedictus’ and Carole Bayer song ‘The Prayer’, which will be conducted by Joan Sulllivan. The spiritual ‘Children of the Light’ will be conducted by Lisa Boessenkool. ‘Flight Song’ by Kim Andre Arensen will be performed by the choir in the final bracket. This piece was written in 2014, as a gift by the composer to the St Olaf Choir, Minnesota. ‘Flight’ is used as a metaphor for the beginning of a young adult life, preparing to take off into the adult world.

The choir is conducted by Joanna Love and accompanied by Lisa Boessenkool.
