National Debating Championships - May 2015

Congratulations to WHS students Rhaz Solomon, Gabrielle Penn and Jackie Hazelhurst who came 3rd at the National Debating Championships held at Victoria University in Wellington on 26 May 2015.

Rhaz Solomon was selected as a member of the Russell McVeagh NZ Schools Debating Team who will be representing NZ in Singapore in July 2015.

Gabrielle Penn won the Rosemary Dixon Cup for Most Promising Speaker.

 

Central North Island Regional Rebating Tournament

The 2015 Central North Island regional debating tournament was hosted on March 21 and 22 at Freyberg High School in Palmerston North.  This year, there were 13 teams in the tournament.

The four teams in the semi-final were Wanganui High School A, Wanganui High School B, Saint Peter’s Green and Boys’ High B. Both the teams from Wanganui High School won their semi-finals and faced each other in the finals, with the motion, “this house believes that military drone strikes are an illegitimate tool of warfare.” Wanganui High School A won on the negating side with a unanimous panel.

Winners (Wanganui High School A):  Rhaz Solomon, Gabrielle Penn and Pratibha Singh

Runners-Up (Wanganui High School B):  Alistair Hughes, Jackie Hazelhurst and Jack Southee

Best Speaker:  Gabrielle Penn

Most Promising Speaker:  Jackie Hazelhurst 

Members of the Central North Island Team:  Rhaz Solomon, Gabrielle Penn and Jackie Hazelhurst

Reserve to the Central North Island Team:  Pratibha Singh

Promising Speaker Award:  Alister Hughes
