New Zealand Area Schools tournament - July 2015

The Central North Island team and their Taihape representatives finished at the top of the New Zealand Area Schools (NZAS) tournament at Springvale this week.

Combining the scores of the four regional squads, made up of 350 pupils from country schools around New Zealand, Central came out on top with 67 points at the end of the seven codes.

Northland had 57 points, Top of the South 57 and Bottom of the South 37.

Yesterday morning, NZAS teams were selected from several of the sports to play invitation teams, while the morning was spent with North Island v South Island games.

"A heap of Taihape kids made the North Island teams," said organiser Loni Martin of Taihape Area School (TAS).

North Island won the basketball, netball and rugby.

NZAS teams took on Wanganui High School in basketball, football, and volleyball, while the netball team met the Wanganui Under 17s and in Ki o Rahi the two chosen NZAS teams faced each other.

TAS pupils picked to represent NZAS were Maia Broughton Edwards (netball), Shelby Inwood and Liam Fellingham (boys football/volleyball), Eliuda Vitata and Anthony Hanson (rugby), Deonie McClay and Samantha McGhie (girls football), and Brooklyn Walker (girls rugby 7s).

TAS golfer Johnston Wallace was also recognised as MVP in the golf event.
