Wanganui teenagers earn regional honours

WHS student Fergus Smith, chosen for the junior men's Manawatu/Wanganui golf team for the Interprovinical tournament.

Three of the Wanganui Golf Club's standout juniors have been chosen for the Manawatu/Wanganui teams to compete at the Interprovincial Junior Golf Championship during the upcoming school holidays.

Fergus Smith, and sisters Tara Raj and Kyra Garratt have retained their standing in the regional scene.

Smith will travel with the eight-strong junior men's team to Cambridge for their four day competition, September 27-30, while Raj and Garrett head to Rotorua for their junior women's event on October 4-7.

New Wanganui club director of golf Dale Cobb said the trio have worked extremely hard to improve and develop their respective games.

"Tara is no stranger to this level of golf, and will have limited recovery time after playing 108 holes over four days in the junior interprovincial.

"She has also been selected to represent Manawatu/Wanganui Golf in the annual Sybil Green Women's Tournament against Wellington, Taranaki and Hawkes Bay region teams."

That senior tournament will be at the Levin Golf Club straight afterwards on the weekend of October 8-9.Likewise, Smith has also be selected in the Manawatu/Wanganui Golf squad compete in the annual Shand Salver Tournament for junior under 19's.

"We are fortunate to have such young committed athletes performing at local, regional and national level," said Cobb.

"It is a sport that requires so much individual ability and the mental fortitude of these young ambassadors shows testament to a range of skill that produces future champions."
