WHS students win bronze at National Culinary Challenge

Britney Walsh (right) and Caitlyn Butlin from Whanganui High School represented the Taranaki/Whanganui region at the National Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge in Auckland recently, coming third out of the eight regions.

Each team had to prepare four servings of an entree using tomatoes and four mains using chicken. These were their dishes.

Entrée: Tomato blushes

All things tomato. A tomato terrine with fresh herbs, quenelled and served with a cracker crumb soil of rice crackers and tomato butter and a shot glass of tomato salsa. Garnished with yellow tomato coulis, dill and African violets

Main: A-tisket, a-tasket - chicken and a vege. basket

A succulent supreme of Waitoa chicken, wood smoked and stuffed with vintage Cheddar cheese and spinach, served with a potato waffle basket filled with florets and pearls of winter vegetables and a shot of plum sauce.

The girls with Linda Hardcastle, HoD Food and Nutrition had a four day culinary experience in Auckland. Apart from the competition they visited the Sky Tower having a meal at Spice Ally and checking out the Orbit 360 restaurant.
